So we’ve been learning asl lately and its been very helpful.

Was learning it mostly so we could communicate with our partner when blendy or confused or when we cloudy control our vocals.

but we’ve found it’s even more useful than that as a system

we can sometimes get hold of a hand when in the back and can give short oneword instructions for our partners (like saying ‘no’ when a littleone wants something we don’t why them having, or ‘toilet’ we we need to go and same littleone thinks is fine to go were they are)

aside from that our youngest alter who can’t get a grasp on vocals yet can sign now abs actually comunicate with the rest of us and our partners. she’s actually starting to ageup thanks to all the learning she’s doing, she almost talks now, and is way less distructive

i dunno, i think it’s worth trying to learn on its own, but i think there’s plenty it can do for a system

i think the first abs must important things to learn as a system are yes, no, toilet, switch, dizzy, and conversation(we use this to let our partners know theres an internal convo happening when they ask if we’re okay or need input on a discussion, without having to say words and interupt our already fragile comunication)

That’s awesome! What are you using to learn ASL? A class, the web? I’m wondering if it could help with communication to one of our kiddos who doesn’t speak, even internally.

we’re using a combination of apps(intersign asl, ace asl, hand talk, mimix3d, rocket languages), youtube, and the internet in general.

we’d like to take a class class but anxiety + forgetfulness + moneystuff has made us reluctant to start the process.

having someone to learn with helps lots too.

I believe ASL would be beneficial for our system as well since certain alters are or can become selectively mute in certain circumstances. Both the hosts and I are hoping to learn at the very least some signs that may be helpful. Our main difficulty is finding others in our life who would be willing to learn with us so they could understand us (Most do not know the entirety of how difficult it can be to speak or be functional in other ways, let alone us being a system). But I still believe it would be valuable to learn for future use with people willing to learn as a way to support us. – H

yeah having someone who will practice with you or wants to communicate in a way you can really helps. both our partness have been really great on that level, but i know that’s a luxury not everyone has.

we’re also setting up practice parties with a fellow system friend over vr with handtracking. or well.. we text about it lot but are both anxious meating up even in vr

We took a semester of ASL in college, but have forgotten it. The problem is not having anyone to talk to in ASL – its definitely a use it or lose it skill. But, I had never considered using ASL to communicate with others in the system, I wonder how well that would work? Maybe being able to make a quick sign or two to ourselves would be beneficial, as there are times we kind of go into language lock down. Worth a ponder, that.

definitely worth exploring i think, but yeah keeping up with it is difficult. i think the main reason we have is because of Crow, she can’t talk any other way yet and is really eager to comunicate. she also loves the game of pointing to things to be told what they are, verbally and with asl
