Do We Have A Disorder?

I have half an hour before I’m scheduled to play Magic The Gathering with friends online, so here goes a quick shot blog entry…

I’ve been wondering if we have or will ever reach a point when we don’t have a disorder. Per the DSM-5-TR, one of the diagnostic criteria for DID is that the symptoms cause “significant distress or impairment”.

The symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

When I think of most of our challenges these days, they AREN’T because of DID, but physical limitations.  The truth is, we’re co-con more often than we’ve ever been, amnesia still happens occasionally but is manageable via all our tricks and gadgets, and well, flashbacks and night terrors still happen once in awhile, but not like they used to. At want point do we say “eh, good enough, we’ve fully realized functional multiplicity”?

It’s an interesting thing to ponder. Financially we’re stable, have a good job, and a boss that works with our… idiosyncrasies.  We live in a house by ourselves. We do get help with shopping and cleaning, but again, that has more to do with physical health, not psychological.   We even have a little bit of a social life, although its admittedly mostly online, but hey, we live in a small town.

Could we seriously have our shit more or less together?

Of course, I’m probably not the right one to answer that question, as I was intended as the “everything is alright” adult face to the world.  Maybe I’m glossing over stuff that I don’t want to see. But, cautiously, I want to say that overall, life is going OK.

And that’s an interesting realization and thing to ponder. I don’t feel “significantly distressed” these days. Oh, I most certainly did for decades, but now I’ve just kind of learned to roll with it, trust in my system, and enjoy what time I get.

And, incidentally, I’m going to go get ready to do some of that enjoyment right now. 🙂  Toodles.
